'Playing for Life' Malawi 2006 (Click on Diary and Photos for update of trip)

Some of you may aready know that I am planning to go to Malawi for over two weeks in October. I am travelling over with a charity called 'Playing For Life', which was set up by Tracy Piggot and a number of prominant GAA personalities (thats hurling and gaelic football for those of you who have never heard of the GAA!) to provide assistance to needy communities in Africa.

Malawi is the third poorest country on earth; where average life expectancy is as low as 37 and where a high percentage of its population suffer from AIDS.

The purpose of the trip is to work with the local community to complete a community centre and asociated infrastructure which will act as a health clinic, school and general meeting place. The inital stages of construction are underway and our group will help complete the project. The trip also has another purpose and that is to run a sports camp for kids in the surrounding region. The camp will provide sports coaching and gear to the kids but also run classes in health and nutrition, money management and IT.

The group consists of 85 people of various disciplines and backgrouds; sport, and in particular the GAA, being the common denominator. The link for the charity is www.playing-for-life.ie so have a look under Malawi 06 for details of the trip - click on the links button on the left hand side of this page. I truly believe its a very worthy project and I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to be part of it.

Each volunteer is committed to raising 5000 euro for this very worthy project so a donation of any amount would be very much appreciated.

For donations from the UK, AUS or US
Please click the 'make a donation' button below. If you have a paypal account you can login and donate using it otherwise you can donate via credit card/debit card

The link is secure but if you have any concerns please email me and I can send on details for bank accounts in Ireland, England and Australia!

Thanks a million
